24th June 1997: “Just hearing his voice made me feel strange and in love.”

I was 13 and had met Ben, who was 20, a few weeks earlier.

This diary entry shows the trials and tribulations of trying to meet up with someone before mobile phones.

On reflection, I think it’s incredibly unlikely he had ‘work to do.’ He had initially told me he was an accountant, but it transpired he really just did admin for an accountancy firm.

“I forgot to put yesterday that I did the 1500 metres.

Mum went to Hazel’s for dinner tonight and I knew she was going so I wrote a letter to Ben saying to meet me outside the Old Infant School and put it through his door.

I waited for ages but he didn’t turn up so I went home but then he phoned up!

Just hearing his voice made me feel really strange and in love!

I love Ben SO much. He said he really wanted to come and see me but he had loads of work to do.”
